Electrolysis is the process of separating hydrogen and oxygen out of water using an electrical current. Electrolysis is a relatively easy way to get hydrogen as a gas by itself. The positively charged hydrogen ion is attracted to the negetively charged cathode, pulling hydrogen away from oxygen. THe negetively charged oxygen ion is then pulled towards the anode. As the hydrogen atom reaches the cathode, it gains an eletron, and becomes a gas. As oxygen reaches the anode, it drops an electron and becomes gas as well. Thus, hydrogen is created and separated as a gas.
